Mit kell tudnod az idiómákról?
Előbb-utóbb mindenki belebotlik élete első angol idiómájába, lefordítja azt, majd nagy valószínűség szerint rájön, hogy annak semmi értelme nincs. Szó szerint lefordítva valóban értelmetlennek tűnhetnek, viszont mivel rendkívül elterjedtek, valódi jelentésüket érdemes megismerni. A magyar nyelvben is előfordulnak ilyenek nagy számban. Például ha valaki fittyet hány valamire bizonyosan nem szó szerint hányja a fittyet a valamire aztán vagy letörli vagy nem. Hogy összesen mennyi ilyen van az angol nyelvben? Nehéz pontosan megmondanom, mert még sosem jutottam el odáig, hogy megszámoljam. Főleg, hogy a források szerint körülbelül 25 000 darab van belőlük és egyes szótárak 10 000 darabot tartalmaznak. Jó lenne egy ilyen szótár nekem, na 😀 Butaság lenne azonban leülni és bemagolni az összes idiómát, még egy anyanyelvi sem ismerheti mindet. Egy átlag native speaker, azaz anyanyelvi beszélő, a gyakorlatban legfeljebb pár százat használ. Te is arra koncentrálj, hogy a számodra legfontosabbakat, leggyakoribbakat tanuld meg apránként.
Most pedig néhány idióma a legfontosabbak közül. Igyekszem minél többet feltenni, és dolgozom egy hatalmas idióma gyűjteményen is, ami a diákjaim számára lesz ingyenesen elérhető.
By the skin of sy's teeth - csak egy hajszálon múlt
“I thought I was going to miss the train but I got there by the skin of my teeth!”
Once in a blue moon - nagyon ritkán
“My granddaughter only calls me once in a blue moon”.
Cut me some slack - légy velem elnéző
“I know you’re upset that he cancelled at a short notice, but cut him some slack – his boss made him stay late every night this week”.
Pull yourself together - szedd össze magad
“Come on man, she broke up with you a year ago. Pull yourself together!”
Against the clock - versenyt futva az idővel
“The team worked against the clock to meet the project deadline.”
Get it out of your system - megtenni valamit, amire nagy szükséged van, hogy megkönnyebbülj
“I just want to go travelling one last time to get it out of my system and then I’ll get a proper job again.”
A recipe for disaster - valami (tett, esemény stb.), ami nagy valószínűség szerint valami rosszat fog maga után vonni
“ Mixing those two chemicals together is a recipe for disaster.”
In seventh heaven - a "mennyekben" lenni, nagyon örülni
“He was in seventh heaven when he got accepted into his dream school.”
All horns and rattles - nagyon mérges
“Joe’s been all horns and rattles since the lawsuit.”
Get your head around it - felfogni, megérteni
“I’m trying to figure out these equations but I can’t get my head around it.”
Get out of hand - kikerül az irányítás alól
“Steven’s drinking has got out of hand. I think he needs help.”
Under the weather - gyengén, kicsit betegen
“Can we meet next week instead? I’m a little under the weather today.”
Take it with a pinch/grain of salt - kétkedéssel fogadni valamit
“Take what Julie says with a pinch of salt. She often exaggerates.”
Hit the nail on the head - fején találni a szöget
“You’re right, Jeff is jealous of me! I’ve never thought about it that way before, but you’ve hit the nail on the head.”
“My new car cost an arm and a leg.”
Miss the boat - lemaradni valamiről
“Last year Sarah offered to get me a job at her company, but I think I’ve missed the boat on that now.”
Stick to your guns - kitart a véleménye mellett
“Everyone thought it was a terrible idea, but I stuck to my guns and now the company is worth a million pounds!”
Pull a rabbit out of a hat - valami meglepőt tenni
“We were sure we would lose the match but Kate pulled a rabbit out of a hat and scored three goals in the last five minutes!”
