4: back from Saudi Arabia part 1

In 2019, the world witnessed a monumental announcement as Saudi Arabia declared its opening to tourism. Though only a few have been fortunate enough to visit this captivating destination, I have recently embarked on a journey to this enchanting land. Underlying this decision lies the Vision 2030 programme, a comprehensive scheme for Saudi Arabia’s economic transformation. This ambitious plan aims to diversify the country’s revenue streams, reduce its dependence on oil, and unleash the potential of various sectors such as tourism, entertainment, and culture.

Upon arrival, I was pleasantly surprised to find that many preconceived notions and prejudices associated with Saudi Arabian people had proven to be grossly inaccurate. The media’s biased portrayal and dissemination of fake news had perpetuated stereotypes of barbarism and gender inequality. However, my experiences shattered these misguided presumptions. I encountered a society mostly filled with warm-hearted, deeply religious individuals, fostering a sense of community and respect. What struck me most were the visible signs of progress in women’s equality. Even in a few short years, women had already started occupying prominent positions, actively driving social progress and defying ingrained misconceptions .

This eye-opening journey has reinforced the importance of being objective when exploring new destinations. It serves as a stark reminder not to judge a place or its people solely based on preconceived ideas. Travelling with an open heart allows us to witness the true essence of a culture and its people, unveiling their hidden gems. By embracing diversity and challenging our own biases, we gain a richer understanding of the world and develop greater empathy and connection.
